Admiral Denham was born in England in 1800. In 1852, in command of HMS Herald in the Western Pacific, he made improvements to naval charts of the Coral Sea. HMS Herald was moored in Farm Cove in 1856. An amateur painter, he sketched views of the ports he visited.

Since 1970 we have recorded only one work being sold at auction by this artist, which was in 1977.
