Eliza Blyth was born in Essex in 1820. Her mother was Elizabeth Crowther, a sketcher. She left England aboard the 'Himalaya' and arrived in Tasmania in 1848. From 1855 - 1875 she ran an art school in Macquarie Street, Hobart and later Davey Street, advertising that she could teach "perspective, watercolour drawing and sketching ". Eliza held many art exhibitions with her students and had a good reputation as an artist. She won many awards in Tasmania and other parts of Australia. Her main subjects were flowers and landscapes. She was elected as a member of the Victorian Academy of Arts in 1877.
