Robert Atkinson was born in England in 1863 and settled. in Auckland as a professional artist in 1885. He was a friend of Albin Martin and illustrated. Kate McCosh Clark's 'Maori Tales and Legends'. in 1896. In 1890 he moved to Sydney and died there in 1896.
