Little is known of the life and artistic career of Phillip Lee. Working in oil on board or canvas, the works listed in the Australian Art Salles Digest are dated between the 1880s-90s. Many of the subjects are bush landscapes without named locations, but those that are named are within the environs of Sydney with one in each of Gippsland and Launceston. He was most likely born in England in 1865 and migrated to Australia, At the time of his death, aged 44 he was working in Bombala, Victoria as a wool classer, but his residential address was in the Waverley (Sydney) local government area.

The total number of works by Phillip Lee offered for sale by auction since 1984 is 52, of which 36 (69%) were sold.
