Born in northern New South Wales in 1956, Peter Cooley attended the Brisbane College of Art and then the City Art Institute in Sydney. Widely known since the 1980s as a painter he is also a ceramist, carpet designer and illustrator often using mixed media. He held his first solo exhibition in 1980 in Sydney and regularly exhibits in that city and in Melbourne. In 2010 he won the Gold Coast International Ceramic Art Prize.
The total number of works by Peter Cooley offered for sale by auction since 1991 is 63, of which 30 (48%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $8,400 for Screen or Scream 1992 sold by Bonhams & Goodman in November 2009. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2022. Works by Peter Cooley are held by the Art Gallery of Western Australia, National Gallery of Australia and a further two major public national galleries (see list below).
