Born in Bordertown South Australia 1948, Ian Hansen is a Sydney artist. He was painting in oils by age 11, and at age 15 joined the Royal Australian Navy, coninuing painting when off-duty. Well known for his marine paintings, he had his first exhibition in Sydney in 1974 and he became a full time artist in 1975. In 2000 he travelled to East Timor at the invitation of the Royal Australian Navy to record their activities, and in 2002 travelled to Antarctica from which he produced an illustrated log. He now works mainly on commission and exhibited with The Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut USA, which closed in 2020 due to the Covid-19 crisis.
