Born in Sunbury, Victoria in 1869, and after leaving school had a variety of occupations, including working as an electrical engineer, although art was his hobby and interest. He was a self-taught etcher and Jbriefly studied painting at evening classes at the National Gallery School from 1890 to 1895. He was elected a member of the Victorian Artists’ Society in 1897 and in 1899 he became a Council Member. Known mainly as an etcher, he established the etching school at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. He is known for his etchings of Melbourne buildings and street scenes and his works are prized for their historical interest as well as their artistic significance.
