Born in Sydney in 1875, Reginald Borstel is known as a marine painter, although he is believed to have had little formal training. His work in the late 1890s/early 1900s features scenes of ships and maritime subjects. He was known to have collaborated with the Sydney photographer Frederick Temple West.
