Born in 1936 in Gore, on the South Island of New Zealand, Trevor Moffitt studied art at the Southland Technical College, University of Canterbury School of Art and Auckland Teachers College. Some of Moffitt's work is biographical, dealing with family histories and his own life. Other series have an historical New Zeland base. Topics include gold mining salmon fishermen, his father's life and the saga of mass killer Stan Graham. In 1964 to '65, whilst working in Timaru, he painted a series of oils based on the life of the legendary New Zealand folk hero, James McKenzie, a drover who stole sheep in 1855.
