Painter, sketcher, cartoonist, writer and solicitor, John Skipper was born on 12 July 1815 in Norwich, Norfolk, England. He migrated to Adelaide, South Australia in 1836 and practiced law, articled to a judge and the South Australian Advocate General. After becoming known as an artist in South Australia depicting its landscape, people and natural history he moved to Victoria, where he travelled and sketched the goldfields. He died in 1883 in Kent Town, South Australia. He was the father of artist Mervyn Skipper (c1884-1950) and grandfather of Matcham Skipper (1921-2011).

Since 1970 we have recorded only one work being sold at auction by this artist, which was in 1986.
