Born in Ireland in 1895, James Turkington arrived in New Zealand as a two-year-old. Mainly self-taught, he did study at Wellington Technical College and later became a well known Auckland as a painter, sculptor and mural painter. He taught at Elam School for 32 years and was a member and later president of the Auckland Society of Arts with which he exhibited in 1948. He also exhibited with New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts in several shows from 1932.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $13,444 for Horses in a Landscape sold by Webb's in July 2003.
