William Beckwith McInnes was born in Melbourne. At the age of 14 joined the National Gallery School under Fred McCubbin. In 1912 travelled abroad, and on returning was appointed drawing master of Melbourne's National Gallery from 1918 to 1933. He was appointed acting director in 1933. McInnes won the Archibald Prize six times: in each year between 1921 and 1924 and then three more times at a later date. He also won the Wynne Prize. He exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1928, and was president of the Australian Art Association in 1923-24. He is recognised as one of Australia's greatest middle period traditional artists.
