Charles S. Bennett was born in Mornington, Victoria in 1869. He became friendly with artist Louis Buvelot, and became proficient in woodcuts, engravings, pen-and ink, sketches and watercolours. He is known to have painted landscapes in and around Melbourne in from the 1880s to the 1930s. He worked as an engraver for newspaper publisher, David Syme & Co. in Melbourne.
