Born in Victoria in 1915, John Ashworth worked as an industrial designer until World War II when he served with the RAAF. In 1949 he was appointed an art teacher in Victoria and he taught art and social studies at Daylesford Technical High School in the early 1950s. In 1961 became director of the Hamilton Art Gallery, through which he continued his vocation as an art educationalist, until his retirement in 1975, changing the gallery into a communal art centre.
