Born in Wellington in 1897, Honour studied under T. A. McCormack. He worked as an insurance broker and painted in his own time. He was aware of the pecunious situation of many artists and was a Founder of the The New Zealand Society of Artists in Christchurch in 1933. In the 1960s he visited England and attended classes with the British Artist, Peter Lanyon. Throughout his life he exhibited widely, including with the Auckland Society of Arts, the Canterbury Society of Arts, and the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts from 1925.during the 1920s and 1930s. His work is mainly of landscapes painted in oils.
The earliest auction listing we have for W. Basil (Basil) Honour is in 1983 and in total 159 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 113 (71%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $2,585 for A Winter Landscape sold by Webb's in June 2005. This year one work has been offered for sale.
