David McCracken was born in 1963 in Auckland. In his teens, he began sculpting figurative work carved in wood and gained skills using fibre and later steel fabrication and welding. He saw the potential for producing art from readily available and inexpensive steel scrap and furthered his metal fabrication skills to include aluminium, stainless steel and corten steel and later he began casting in bronze and stainless steel. In 2000 he had his first solo exhibition Fabrications at the McPherson Gallery, Auckland, and exhibited at the Beecroft Outdoor Sculpture show. In 2001 he was short listed for the New Zealand Wallace Art Awards and had a second show at McPherson Gallery as well as some private. commissions. He lives and works in Auckland.
