Born in Hamilton, New Zealand in 1945, Joanna Paul is the daughter of artist Janet Paul. Joanna studied art in London at the Sir John Cass College and at the Elam School of Fine Arts at the University of Auckland. Besides painting and drawing, she is a poet, photographer and film maker. Domesticity features as a regular theme in her work. Paul held her first solo exhibition in 1968 and was awarded the Frances Hodgkins Fellowship in 1983. While married to J. Harris in in the early 1970s she signed her paintings with the surname "Harris".
