Born in Camperdown, Victoria in 1906, Gardner studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne, and on completion, in company with Rex Battarbee he travelled extensively through central and eastern Australia. Originally a commercial artist, he left a successful career to take up painting full time. Primarily a painter in oils of bush landscapes and Aboriginal life, he first exhibited in Melbourne in 1929 at the Athenaeum Gallery and continued exhibiting there until 1971.
