Born in England in 1852, Herbert Gibbs studied at the Royal College of Art in London. In 1981 he migrated to South Australia, moving to Perth in 1885. There he taught drawing at Perth Grammar School and later became the senior draftsman of the Western Australian Lands office. Gibbs was a prominent member of the Perth Landscape Painters' Club.
