Born in Leeds, England in 1950, John Cartwright migrated to Perth with his family as a teenager in 1966. He was educated at the University of Western Australia. He is a self taught naïve artist, working in oils and enamels, and his work has been exhibited widely in Western Australia and also in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane, and in Auckland, New Zealand. He has been awarded a number of provincial art prizes including the Bunbury City Art Purchase Prize in 1979.
