Robert Hans George Jahnke was born in 1951 in the Gisborne region of New Zealand, raised at Waipiro Bay on the East Coast. He attended Ardmore Teachers' College in Papakura in 1970, where he was taught painting, ceramics and art history although he did not complete his teachers' college study. After that he worked in the furniture industry, studying life drawing and design in the evening. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts, and a Masters in Experimental Animation from California Institute of the Arts. In 1991 he was appointed a tutor at the School of M?ori Art at Massey University in Palmerston North and in 2006, Jahnke was awarded a Doctor of M?ori Studies from Massey University. eventually becoming Professor of M?ori Visual Arts at that institute. Jahnke employs a range of media to create work that tackles issues of identity, colonisation and intercultural exchange, and to explore M?ori creation narratives in a multidimensional way. Jahnke's artwork is held in the collections of The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa and the Auckland City Art Gallery.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $15,695 for I Am Kiwi (A Brash Statement) sold by Art+Object in December 2021. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023.
