Born in New Zealand in 1900, Carl Laugesen studied at Canterbury School of Art in the 1920s. He then worked in poster design and commercial art in Wellington. He served in the New Zealand Army Home Defence for three years during the Second World War. After the war, Laugesen taught at the Wellington Technical College of Art for eight years, during which time he became a professional artist specialising in landscapes and portraits. He is also known for portraits of Maori women.
