Born at Frankton, New Zealand in 1927, Garth Tapper studied at the Elam School of Fine Arts, where he later taught, and in Europe. In 1960 he joined the staff of Auckland University's School of Fine Arts. He has been noted for his social comments on the New Zealand way of life, ranging from family portraits to the genre of pub life.
