Born in Dunedin in 1939, Barry Cleavin studied at the School of Fine Arts, University of Canterbury from 1963 to 1966 and in 1977 at the Honlolu Academy of Art in Hawaii. He has exhibited widely and is represented in numerous public collections. He was a SeniorLecturer in Printmaking at the School of Fine Arts, University of Canterbury from 1978 to 1990. He was awarded awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2001. His work has also been the subject of two major surveys, Ewe & Eye at the Auckland Art Gallery in 1982 and The Elements of Doubt at the Robert McDougall Art Gallery in 1987.
