Born in London in 1827, John Henderson studied art in Edinburgh and architecture in London. He migrated to Australia in 1851 and after working on the goldfields, was employed by the Victorian Government Surevey Office. He sketched around Melbourne and the goldfields in the 1850's and 60's and exhibited in the Melbourne Intercolonial Exhibition of 1856. He moved to Sydney in 1877 where he continued to work until the early 1900s. His works are of early historical interest and are represented in the Mitchell Library.
