The nephew of Samuel Prout, Prout was born in England in 1806 and arrived in Australia in 1840 where he became a well-known and successful artist, / lithographer and lecturer. He moved to Hobart, Tasmania where he established a vogue for painting in watercolour and published further lithographs before returning to London in 1848 In 1844 he published a series of lithographic views in 'Sydney Illustrated'. Here he began a fashion for painting watercolours. After a brief visit to Melbourne he returned to England in 1848.
