Born in Temora, New South Wales in 1942, Schlunke studied at the East Sydney Technical College and received much encouragement from Sydney artist, Arthur Murch. Working in oils he paints semi-abstract, atmospheric scenes of the Australian bush. He first exhibited at the Barry Stern Gallery in 1963 and held the first of many one-man shows at the same gallery in 1966. Schlunke has twice won the Rural Bank Prize. A retrospective exhibition of his works was held in 1988 at the Wagga Wagga Regional Art Gallery.
The total number of works by David Schlunke offered for sale by auction since 1972 is 151, of which 95 (63%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $5,400 for Landscape with Ibis sold by Menzies in September 2016. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2021. Works by David Schlunke are held by the Queensland Art Gallery.
