Born in Victoria in 1884, Nicholas studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne, and in Paris. She is best known for her earlier paintings of the Australian way of life and for her later series of Moroccan works, usually in pastels. An associate of the New Salon in Paris, she has exhibited widely in both Australia and Europe. Her works are represented in several state and provincial collections.
The total number of works by nee Rix Nicholas offered for sale by auction since 1972 is 178, of which 122 (69%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $219,600 for The Shepherd of Knockalong sold by Deutscher and Hackett in December 2015. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by nee Rix Nicholas are held by the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria and a further five major public national galleries (see list below).
