About Ella Juliet Spicer
Born Eleanor Adams in Otago, New Zealand in 1876, Ella Spicer studied painting under Fanny Wimperis and Girolamo Nerli. She moved to Wellington and married in 1907. Mainly known for her watercolours, she exhibited with the Otago Art Society from 1894 to 1900, and with the Auckland Society of Arts from 1907. Ella Spicer was mother of Auckland watercolourist Peggy Spicer.
The total number of works by Ella Spicer offered for sale by auction since 1988 is 157, of which 121 (77%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,858 for Lower Symonds Street, Auckland sold by International Art Centre in March 2005. This year one work has been offered for sale.
