Ruth Millar was born Lesley Cecile Cossgrove on 24th August 1914 in Palmerston North. She was educated in Christchurch and studied for seven years at Canterbury College of Art. Her tutors included Leonard Booth, Louise Henderson, Richard Wallwork, and Elizabeth and Cecil Kelly. Following her marriage to David Millar she painted under the name of Ruth Millar. Portraits were her first love but her work evolved as her thinking changed, and she progressed to abstract work and focussed on color and different techniques. Her first exhibition was in 1956/57 at the Academy of Fine Arts, Wellington and she participated in numberous solo and group exhibitions after that.

Since 1970 we have recorded only one work being sold at auction by this artist, which was in 1995.

Ruth Millar is listed in the following standard biographical references:

  • McGahey, Kate. The Concise Dictionary of New Zealand Artists Painters Printmakers Sculptors, Gilt Edge Publishing, Wellington, New Zealand, 2000. Page 172
