Born in Wainui, New Zealand in 1881, Annie May Moore studied at the Elam School of Art and Design in Auckland about 1900 and was working as a portrait artist in Auckland from about 1904, By 1908 she was working with her sister Mina Moore, as portrait photographers in a Wellington studio. In 1911 they moved to Australia, opening studios in Sydney and Melbourne. Annie managed the Sydney studio. In 1915, May married Henry Hammon (Harry) Wilkes, a dentist with literary interests who later managed the studio. She continued working in the studio until about 1928.
