Born in Carlton, a Melbourne suburb in 1888, Ida Outhwaite was well known early in the twentieth century as an illustrator of children's books, working predominantly with pen and ink, and watercolour. Working in collaboration with her sister, her first book was published in 1904, and she continued her work up until World War II, working in collaboration with one of her sisters or her husband. Her illustrations were exhibited throughout Australia, as well as in London and Paris between 1907 and 1933.
