Born in South Australian painter in 1895, Arthur Boxall Studied as the School of arts and Crafts in Adelaide, and Slade School in London. He worked in architecture for seven years before becoming an art teacher at St Peters school in Adelaide. His first solo exhibition, reputedly a sellout, was in Adelaide in 1925 and he departed for London the following year. After completing his studies at Slade School he travelled and painted extensively in Europe and other countries, favouring portraits, landscapes, figure compositions and genre painting. He exhibited at Royal Academy and Paris Salon in 1928-29. Returning to Australia, in 1932 Boxall was appointed to the East Sydney Technical College as teacher of life-drawing. He became head teacher of art and remained there until he resigned owing to ill health in 1940.
