Born in Dunedin in 1935, Quentin MacFarlane studied at the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts and the Auckland Post Primary Teachers College. He became a lecturer in art at the Auckland Post Primary Teachers College and from 1975 at the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts. Best known for his strong semi-abstract landscapes, he exhibited in the Hays Art Competitions in 1960, 1962, 1963 and 1966, at the Auckland Society of Arts, the Canterbury Society of Arts, and with The Group from 1960. In 1980 he was appointed Director of the Robert MacDougall Art Gallery (now Christhchurch Art Gallery).
The total number of works by Quentin MacFarlane offered for sale by auction since 1993 is 57, of which 43 (75%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $12,955 for Pegasus Bay sold by International Art Centre in March 2024. This year 3 works have been offered for sale.
