Born at Toowoomba. Queensland, Jesse Hilder entered Sydney Art School under Julian Ashton, where he enrolled under the name of Joyce, in order not to risk the disapproval of his employers at the bank. He first exhibited at the Society of Artists, Sydney, in 1907 and he retired from bank in 1908 owing to his health, and spent the remaining years painting. Mary Gilmore said: 'He made the golden air of this land visible to all of us as it was to him.'
Jesse Hilder is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1966 of 422, of which 323 (77%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $46,325 for Landscape with Boy and Goats sold by Sotheby's in November 2005.
