Born in Poland in 1918, Dutkiewicz studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Cracow, Poland, and in Paris. After a period in Russian and German prisoner-of-war camps he arrived in Australia in 1949 with his brother, Ludwig. After 1956, when he was injured in a motor accident, Dutkiewicz worked in theatrical production and became influential in post World War II Adelaide art. His work is represented in major overseas collections including the Vatican.
