Born in South Australia in 1927, Alison Coaldrake (nee Murdoch) studied in Adelaide while working in the Botany Department of the University of Adelaide. A painter, printmaker and botanical illustrator, she studied at various times under Lawrence Daws, John Olsen, Andrew Sibley and Fred Cress. She also went on study tours overseas. Coaldrake held her first solo exhibition in Brisbane in 1973.
