Gabriel Sterk was born in Holland in 1942 and arrived in Australia in 1958. A sculptor in bronze, his first art lessons were evening classes at the Adelaide School of Fine Arts and at the age of 17 returned to Europe, spending two months studying in Italy, and then 7 years at the Royal Academy of Fine Art, Amsterdam. In 1969, aged 27, he was awarded the medal of the Prix de Rome for his David and Saul, and Adam and Eve, and in 1974 he received the medal of the 'Paul-Louis Weiller Prix du Portrait' from the 'Institut de France'. He completed over 30 private commissions during this period. He spent 1975 to 1985 in Australia, setting up his own foundry in South Australia from which he produced many portraits, equestrian studies, and monumental pieces. He returned to Europe in 1985 settling near Paris where he worked and exhibited. He moved to Aix en Provence in 2000 where he lives and works.
