Born in Melbourne in 1870, Hansen studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne from 1888 to 1892, and began exhibiting at the Victorian Artists Society in 1893. He studied in Paris at Colarossi in 1896 and began exhibiting in Paris in and at the Royal Academy in London. Principally a landscape artist, he exhibited with the Victorian Artists Society, and in Paris and London. He returned to Melbourne and exhibited at the Victorian Artists Society until 1906.
