Born in Adelaide in 1958, Peter Walsh studied at the Wimbledon School in London from 1975 to 1979. He arrived in Melbourne in 1979 and studied at the Victorian College of Arts, Melbourne in 1981 and was awarded a Diploma of Fine Art. In 1986 he had his first major exhibition and over his career exhibited in about 26 solo exhibitions in Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra, as well as about 40 group exhibitions. He was awarded a residency at Arthur Boyd's Bundanon home in 2003, where he created a suite of works revealing his sensitivity to the landscape. He won the Mornington Regional Gallery Prize in 2002 and 2003.
