About Kilmeny Niland
Kilmeny Niland was born in 1950 in Auckland, New Zealand and educated in Sydney. She is the twin sister of Deborah Niland, with both pursuing parallel career paths, studying art at the Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney and then travelling to London. While in London, Kilmeny and Deborah began their art careers by illustrating a book for Transworld Publishers, and other books for this publisher followed. In the 1970s they produced 9 books together and illustrated Banjo Paterson's Mulga Bill's Bicycle, which has never been out of print. She also won the Le Gay Brereton prize for drawing. As well as book illustration, she painted and designed greeting cards, and exhibited in Australia and overseas. She won numerous prizes for miniature art, including the 2000 Faber Castell Grand Prize at the Combined Australian Societies of Miniature Art. She died in 2009 aged 59 and an exhibition of her work and a celebration of her life was held at the Julian Ashton Art School.
