About Marjorie McChesney Mathews
Born in Victoria in 1908, Marjorie Mathews studied in Melbourne under Max Meldrum and A.D. Colquhoun at the national Gallery Art School and also studied sculpture at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. A painter and sculptor, from 1929 until the 1960s she taught art at secondary and tertiary level, after which she taught art at private classes in her home. Mathews was secretary of the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors in the 1960s.
