A contemporary New Zealand artist, Tom Esplin was born in Scotland in 1915 and studied art at Edinburgh College. Esplin exhibited at the Royal Society of Artists, London and the Royal Society of Watercolourists, Scotland. He moved to New Zealand in 1954 is recorded as lecturing at the Otago Teachers College. Esplin has frequently exhibited his work throughout New Zealand and is noted for his colourful decorative paintings. He worked in oil, painting street and village scenes of Europe, where he travelled for three months of each year from 1980-1998. He was a popular and successful artist and lecturer working in his own destinctive style semi abstract with cubist tendencies, often painted solely with a palette knife in attractive and cheerful colours. He inspired generations with his knowledge and passion for art.
