Born in Dunedin in 1921, Peter Brown took up art after his return to New Zealand after World War II, having been imprisoned in a POW camp in Germany. He enrolled in and graduated from the Elam School of Art in Auckland after which he taught there for 10 years. He travelled to London and studied at the Slade School in London. On returning to New Zealand Peter Brown painted as well as taught, and he became known for his landscapes, still life, flowers and portraits. He moved to Hawke's Bay in the mid 1960s, becoming a tutor with the Hawke's Bay Art Society for 5 years.
