Born in Aberdeen Scotland in 1862, Souter studied at South Kensington before his arrival in Australia in 1886. He became a member of the staff of the 'Bulletin' and drew carttons for the magazine for more than 40 years. He was a founder of the Brush Club within the Royal Art Society of NSW and was president of the New South Wales Society of Artists. In 1904 he became art editor of 'Art and Architecture'.
