Lesley Alison Moline (nee O'Toole) was born in Jolimont, Western Australia. Moline studied at Perth Technical College before moving to Melbourne in 1933. She met Hayward Veal in Sydney in 1938 and studied as a Meldrumite under Veal and later Graeme Inson at Inson's Rowe Street studio in Sydney. She took lessons with Max Meldrum in Melbourne in 1952 and had her first solo exhibition at the Stables, Pymble, NSW c1965. Many of her paintings at this time were simply signed "Lesley". She produced many small landscapes near Sydney as well as portraits of Sydney identities such as Betty Archdale, Bill Peach and John Thornton, but Lesley gave up Meldrum painting when she started as a student of Desiderius Orban in 1973 at the age of sixty-two.
