Born in 1903, Dorothea Francis studied under various teachers in Melbourne, later joining her sister Margaret Francis as a student at the George Bell School. She exhibited her paintings with the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors from 1922 to 1975 and later with the Melbourne Contemporary Artists from 1942 to 1965. She was the older sister of artist Margaret Francis (1909 - 1987). She died in 1975, and a retrospective of her work with her mother was held in Melbourne in 2001.
