Born in 1973, Ben Quilty studied at Sydney College of the Arts gaining a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Painting), Monash University and the University of Western Australia. In 2002 he won the Brett Whitely Travelling Art Scholarship and has been a full-time artist since then. He won the 2009 Doug Moran Prize, the Archibald Prize in 2011 and the 2012 Redlands Westpac Art Prize. He has had over 30 solo exhibitions in Australia and overseas, and participated in many group exhibitions. He was appointed an official war artist by the Australian War Memorial, and spent three weeks in Afghanistan documenting the lives of Australian soldiers. He is on the Board of the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
