Born in Melbourne in 1950, Katherine Hattam is the daughter of doctor, artist and art collector, Hal Hattam (1913-94). She was awarded a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of Melbourne in 1974, a Master of Fine Arts from the Victorian College of the Arts and a PhD from Deakin University in 1994. She has held over 40 solo exhibitions in Melbourne, Canberra and Adelaide from 1978 to 2020, as well as numerous group exhibitions. She has been a finalist in numerous art shows, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales Sulman Prize in 2002 and 2020, the Art Gallery of New South Wales Dobell Drawing Prize in five shows, and the Paddington Art prize in Sydney in four shows.
