A Lithuanian, Jonas Balsaitis was born in a German refuge camp in 1948 and arrived in Australia in 1949. A painter and film maker, Balsaitis studied in Melbourne in the 1960s and in 1976 was awarded the Film Radio and TV Board (Australia Council) grant.
We have records of art auction sales by Jonas Balsaitis from 1992 and in total 25 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 20 (80%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $11,045 for Kookaburra, View of Kosciuszko from Bass Strait 1997 sold by Leonard Joel in February 2022. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Jonas Balsaitis are held by the National Gallery of Victoria, National Gallery of Australia and a further two major public national galleries (see list below).
